Return Envelope Guidelines

Guidelines for Preparing Your Return Envelope


Use a tracked postal service for your self-addressed return envelope to reduce the risk of loss or delay.

Recommended delivery method

  • Einschreiben Einwurf (currently €4.15) is the most affordable tracked option we have used.
  • You may choose any tracked service — a tracking number is mandatory.

Option A — Einschreiben Einwurf label

Attach the Einschreiben Einwurf sticker/label directly to your self-addressed return envelope.

Stamps totaling at least €4.15 on return envelope

Option B — Stamps

Affix stamps totaling at least €4.15 to your self-addressed return envelope.

Note about the Einschreiben Einwurf label

Some applicants have reported that certain post offices do not sell the label in advance. If you encounter this, use the stamp option above.

Important reminders

  • The return envelope must include a tracking number. The Embassy cannot send passports via untracked post.
  • While the Embassy supports a safe return process, it is not liable for delays, loss, or damage caused by the postal service.
