On 11 November 2025, the Royal Embassy of Cambodia in Berlin celebrated the 72nd Anniversary of Cambodia’s Independence Day, welcoming around 250 guests. Among them were Ambassador Dr. Joachim Bertele, Deputy Director General for East Asia, Southeast Asia and the Pacific of the Federal Foreign Office, as a Guest of Honour, members of the Diplomatic Corps, representatives from German institutions and businesses, and the Cambodian community in Germany.
On the occasion, His Excellency Ambassador CHHEANG Thyra highlighted the significance of Independence Day as a symbol of Cambodia’s peaceful liberation under His Majesty the Late King Father Norodom Sihanouk and the nation’s enduring spirit of unity and peace. He also underscored Cambodia’s transformation since 1998, Germany’s role as Cambodia's largest trading partner in Europe, and the Kingdom’s ongoing commitment to peace, stability, and UN peacekeeping.
On Cambodia–Thailand relations, His Excellency the Ambassador reaffirmed Cambodia’s consistent position of turning shared borders with neighbouring countries into areas of friendship, peace, cooperation, and sustainable development. He expressed Cambodia's deep appreciation for the valuable support of the ASEAN Chair Malaysia, the United States, China, and other friends in promoting peace and normalcy between Cambodia and Thailand. He emphasized that Cambodia highly values the leadership of the U.S. President Donald J. Trump and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, whose efforts were instrumental in facilitating the ceasefire agreement on 28 July and the signing of the Joint Declaration on Peace in Malaysia on 26 October.
The celebration also featured three main video presentations that opened the program, highlighting the Royal Crusade for Independence, Cambodia’s cultural heritage and tourism attractions, and trade and investment opportunities. Additional videos were screened throughout the event to complement these presentations. Guests also enjoyed a live cultural performance by Cambodian artists from Cologne, a tasting of traditional Khmer dishes such as Amok Trei and Num Banh Chok, and a variety of desserts, and displays of cultural artifacts, agricultural products, and tourism materials for exploration. Give-away kits were also provided, allowing attendees to take home materials and souvenirs promoting Cambodia’s culture, tourism, and economic opportunities.
